Description
In Ireland, it is thought that the Celtic Christian cross was introduced by Saint Patrick, who combined the cross, the symbol of Christianity, with the circle which represented pagan sun worship. It is supposed that the combination of the two made it easier to convert pagan sun worshipers. Another theory is that by placing the cross on top of the circle represents Christ's supremacy over the pagan sun. This cross is decorated with the Celtic knot, a design going back not only to early Christian, but to early Byzantine and Coptic design. This original photo taken at the Rock of Cashel, Co. Tipperary, Ireland, by Nadalyn Larsen.
