Description
Clare Abbey Church and Graveyard Ennis, Ireland, was once connected to the highest clans in the region. The Cistercian Abbey was built between 1189 and 1194 but most of the construction is from the 15th century. The square central tower of the main enclosure is still intact standing above an archway that divides the chapel in half. Each gable end has an elaborate high arched window displaying the stonework that these ancient craftsmen were famous for and within the walls are several grave markers and headstones. In 1278 the abbey was the scene of carnage when factions of the O'Brien Clan were involved a fracas between themselves which left many people slaughtered. By 1700 it was a ruin. The graveyard is still used today and there are many interesting tombs, vaults and gravestones most of which are in a surprisingly good condition. Original photo by Nadalyn Larsen.
