Clonmacnoise was founded in 548 by St. Ciaran, the son of a master craftsman. The settlement soon became a major center of religion, learning, trade, craftsmanship and politics due to its location at crossroads on the River Shannon (flowing north-south) and the gravel ridges of the glacial eskers (running east-west). Though religion was the central focus at Clonmacnoise, it always had a large lay population and looked more like a town than a monastery. The sight has ruins of several churches, a tower, a castle, and a graveyard. It is home to one of the finest high crosses in Ireland, and one of the three most important. From the grounds were excavated thousands of relics and artifacts and over 700 engraved gravestone slabs, the most anywhere in Ireland and the most unique, dating to as far back as the 8th century. From the Artist: I am a photographer with an eclectic eye. I shoot anything that catches my attention, whether a detail of a larger object or the expanse of a landscape. When photographing places or events, I strive to convey the feeling or impression I felt from the experience as much as sharing the scene. I like to experiment with my art, particularly creating abstract photographs. I am challenged to take my photos from the seat of a mobility device. Despite my challenges, I have traveled throughout the US and internationally, capturing the world from my perspective. I hope you enjoy my work. Feel free to contact me through this site if you have questions or requests. Also, please feel free to comment on any work that you find...
