Description
The Australia, on exhibit at Mystic Seaport, was actually an American built ship. Initially it was named the Ella Alida. The name changed several time over its life span. It sold to the British during the Civil War and renamed the Alma. She was used to smuggle munitions and supplies to the South. She was captured by the Union Navy. After the war she was sold, renamed again, and used to ship good up and down the East Coast of the US. She sailed for over 60 years. Origianal photo by Nadalyn Larsen.
