Description
Haut Koenigsbourg is a 12th century castle in the far eastern Alsace region of France near the German border. It is about a 30-minute drive from Strasbourg. Alsace was claimed back and forth between the two countries for centuries. The first mention of the castle was in documents from 1147. The castle was built as a mountain fortress. It was abandoned in 1622 and fell into disrepair. In 1899 the city of Sélestat offered it to William II of Hohenzollern. He set out to restore the castle as it was in the Middle Ages. This was never fully accomplished. Successive owners have added to the “restoration” as they saw fit. Unfortunately, much of the work was not accurate to the original design or times. So much so that it felt like I was on a movie set rather than in a medieval castle. It is an interesting experience, nonetheless. One of the things I thought looked most medieval, whether they actually were or not, were the stunning wood and metal-work doors and the spiral stairs with the face in the ceiling at the top.
