Description
Kaysersberg castle was built by for Emperor Frederick II of Hohenstaufen, around 1220. It had a strategic role of blocking passages to Lorraine district. The circular keep is the oldest part of the castle and one of the 1st of its kind in the Upper Rhine Valley. In the late 15th century the castle was adapted to the use of firearms by enclosing the battlements with wooden shutters, installing shooting slots, and covering the walkway. It was abandoned at the end of the 16th century. In the mid-1700’s it was sold. The new owner planted the vineyard that remains adjacent to it. Original photo by Nadalyn Larsen.
