Description
Metz Cathedral in the city of Metz France is one of the most impressive in the Country. There are several unique features that impress and astound. Everything about the building says, “look up.” The dramatic play of the colorful stained-glass and the sculptural ceiling is amazing. The building dates from the 4th century. The current Gothic style church dates back over 800 years. Is was nicknamed “God’s Lantern” for the glowing gold limestone and the amazing stained glass windows. Even though every aspect of the building is ornate and beautiful, to me, the stained glass is the most impressive feature. There are over 70,000 square feet of stained-glass windows. In three tiers, they reach from near ground level to the lofty vaulted ceiling. The brightly colored panes were designed to take advantage of the light coming through the glass. Everything about the building draws the eye up, and the view is not disappointing. I hope my photos convey the awe one feels in this place.
The city of Metz is in the Moselle region of the Lorraine district of northeastern France. It is a lovely and friendly town with numerous surprises and interesting things to see, such as beautiful architecture, gorgeous churches, wonderful museums, excellent food and much more.
