Description
White Sands National Park in New Mexico is the world’s largest gypsum dune field at 275 square miles of desert. Gypsum is rarely found in sand, much less as sand and in this quantity. The gypsum field began over 280 million years ago when the Permian Sea covered this area and gypsum settled on the sea floor. The formation of the dunefield continues today in an endless cycle of erosion and reformation. Despite the arid conditions, the sand supports a good deal of plant and animal life, including some found nowhere else in the world. Original photo by Nadalyn Larsen.
